Quinte Arts Council events

Tickets are on sale for the Quinte Arts Council’s Crystal Holiday Magic to be held Nov. 14, 20, 22, 23 and 27. The event will kick off on Nov. 14 with Skate with Santa, a free skate at Memorial Arena, downtown Belleville, after the Santa Claus Parade. The event will continue at the Ramada Inn, 11 Bay Bridge Rd., Belleville – On Nov. 20, enjoy the Crystal Cocktail Dance Party with silent auction and music by The Reasons; on Nov. 22, The Crystal Ball Gala Dinner and Dance will feature an amazing live and silent auction and music by Filet of Soul (sold out); Nov. 23 is an all-day event for families starting with Rudolf’s Pancake Breakfast, music and fun with Magoo, and Dufflebag Theatre’s hilarious production of Rudolf The Red-Nosed Reindeer; then it’s Hot Chocolate with Santa in the Crystal Palace, then more fun with Magoo, music with Andy Forgie and Dufflebag Theatre’s A Christmas Carol. Home Ownership Assistance Program
The assistance is in the form of an interest free forgivable loan of 5% of the purchase price of the home to a maximum of $7,500. The eligibility criteria are the same as the previous program and deadline to register is Dec. 15, 2008. In fact, Volunteer and Information Quinte partners with the Ministry and Phil Jones to put together this tool for parents that raise children. We need one listing per program that you offer. Ten Thousand Villages store comes to Picton
St. Andrew's Presbyterian church is bringing a Ten Thousand Villages franchise to Picton's main street. Ten Thousand Villages is a retail outlet founded by the Mennonite Central Committee in the 50's to provide a venue for artisans to sell their products and receive a fair price.
The store at 217 Main St. will open at the end of November for 2 weeks to host a Festival Sale. The official opening will take place in April. When we provide artisans with a fair wage for their work we ensure that they can provide schooling and health care for their families. For more information call Lynne at 613-476-1167.

Performing Arts Bancroft
Presents a full season for 2008-09. Season tickets will once again be available at Posies, Harvest Moon and Guitar Nuts.
- Our season begins with a moving performance by the very talented Julian Gallo, world renowned Tenor, presenting “The Hits of the Blitz”. On Sunday November 9, 2008 we will be entertained with the dynamic and memorable music of the WW I and WWII era, as we prepared to honour or veterans on Remembrance Day November 11th.
- Next, grab your sweet hearts and join us on February 14, 2009 for a tribute to one of music’s greatest talents, Johnny Cash. We present “The Legend in Black”, accompanied by a three piece band and complete with guest appearance by June Carter Cash. Not only do they share the same birthday, Bill Cayley’s likeness in appearance and sound are phenomenal, an evening not to be missed!
- Our season wraps up on Saturday May 9, 2008, with Jennifer White, Celtic Harpist and Story Teller. Jennifer will enthrall you with her amazing talent with both words and music. A great event to bring your Mother and the whole family!
Quinte Grannies for Africa
A quick reminder about their calendar. It is still for sale and it is their major fundraiser.
One calendar will buy supplies for home-based HIV/Aids care visits or provide fees and school supplies for an orphan for a year. Two calendars will pay for garden seedlings that will produce vegetables for 6 months for a family of four. Four calendars provide a loan to a granny to start her own sustainable business or safe drinking water for her home. The cost is $20.00. Quinte Grannies for Africa
Quinte Grannies for Africa is one of two hundred granny groups across Canada who raises awareness of and money for African grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren because their children have died of Aids. This calendar is a major fundraiser of the Quinte Grannies for Africa. Twelve local grannies had the courage to bare themselves (in good taste) knowing that their efforts will benefit the grandmothers across the ocean. The cost is $20.00. Play
Open Auditions for male and female youth actors for “Silent Hugs”, a play sponsored by the Elementary Teachers of Hastings-Prince Edward, United Nations Association of Quinte, and the Military Family Resource Centre in Trenton. The play is designed to portray the lives of military families while a family member is on deployment overseas. Several speaking and non-speaking roles are available for both males and females from Grades 4-8. Auditions will be held on Monday Sept. 8 and Monday, Sept. 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Federation House, 114 Victoria Ave, Belleville.

A Long Wet Summer !

I hope everybody is enjoying the summer even though we have not had the nicest weather. It is a great time then to start volunteering !

Membership
For the agencies that are VIQ member, we will be sending the invoices between Aug. 18 and 31. Membership is due September 1st.

Community Key
It is possible to purchase the new Community Key 2008/09. As of today, the book is available at VIQ office and at the Quinte West Chamber of Commerce, Front St. in Trenton. The book is $35 and VIQ members have 20% discount. Get your copy of the unique resource directory of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties, including thousands of programs and services offered in our area.

Dragon Boat
Volunteer and Information Quinte is partnering with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties to put together a team in the Dragon Boat race in support of the United Way of Quinte. We are looking for paddlers ! One practice is included the week before the event which will be September 13th. Each paddlers have to raise $50 in pledges.
